Founded in 1998, the Research Unit for the Cultures of Spain at the University of Haifa has adopted the following goals:

  • Furthering the study of the cultures of Spain by means of research into a wide array of disciplines pertaining to Spain:  history, literature, philosophy, sociology, psychology, law.
  • Encouraging cooperation between Israeli and Spanish researchers in this field of the cultures of Spain.
  • Organizing workshops of researchers from Israel and abroad in order to develop international cooperation on research projects.
  • Developing a dialogue between researchers from Israel and Arab countries based on the Jewish-Christian-Moslem encounter in medieval Spain, with the participation of Spanish researchers.
  • Utilizing the results of these discussions and joint research activities to contribute to the culture of peace.

The Unit, which cooperates closely with the Embassy of Spain in Israel, Spanish universities, and UNESCO, as well as with researchers into the cultures of Spain from all of Israel's universities, commenced its activity by organizing, together with the government of Madrid and Spanish universities a workshop of researchers in the framework of an international colloquium entitled, Multicultural Societies: Spain as a Model (February 1999).  Researchers from all of Israel's universities and from four Spanish universities participated in the colloquium, which led to the formulation of guidelines for joint research to be conducted by Israeli and Spanish researchers.
